President’s Message:

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings as the Fall gets underway, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you what’s happening within NFBPA at the National Level as well as what the local chapter has on its agenda.

As I stated in my earlier letter I would like our chapter to focus on “Emerging Leaders and Emerging Issues” to this end our Bay Area Achievers’ Awards will recognize Judge Trina Thompson, SF City Administrator Naomi Kelly, Berkeley Youth Alternatives Kevin Williams, and Starbucks Senior Manager Kim Winston. We have also secured Kwame Kilpatrick, former mayor of Detroit as our Dinner Speaker. It should be a memorable event. The date of the Achievers Dinner is November 16, 2012 beginning at 6:00pm at the Oakland Hilton, near the airport.

We are also spotlighting the Shoe Box Project and asked that you familiarize yourself with that program and bring a “shoe box” filled with the specified items.

If you did not attend our June general membership meeting, you missed an excellent program put on by the City of Richmond’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and the work they are doing to reduce gun violence in that city. They are partnering with us to bring Kilpatrick to the Bay Area and will have him participate in a workshop in Richmond on Saturday following our awards dinner.

On the national level you will be receiving in the not too distant future a request to update your membership information. This is to better identify who the membership is and what positions and degrees they currently hold. You will be asked to complete the membership form even if your membership dues are not due. In the future this will become part of the membership renewal process.

I recently spoke with Troy Brown, Assistant City Manager City of Livermore, regarding the ICMA Vice President’s process. While California is not currently in the queue for the position we do have a role to play in serving in the nominating process. Stay tuned for more on this. If any of you are members of ICMA and NFBPA it would be good for you to identify yourself.

I will be attending the Fall Leadership Meeting in Tampa, Florida October 4-6, 2012 and will report back on that at a future date.

That’s it for now, be blessed.
